MoET focuses on developing private kindergartens

The Ministry of Education and Training issued a circular giving incentives to private kindergartens. According to the circular, the Government will rent premises out to private kindergartens. Along with preferential tax rates and credits, these schools will receive financial assistance to construct or renovate facilities from local authorities. The Government will come up with a budget partially based on teachers' salaries and raises. Teachers will also be given the option of buying social, unemployment and medical insurance, like their counterparts at public schools. Teacher obligations will also be standartised. They will be responsible for designing lesson plans, for three to six years old, that are in line with the National Curriculum, universalising education programmes for five year olds and helping to integrate disabled children into the community. These private schools will be required to manage and use human resources in accordance with labour law and make sure that their facilities meet the standards of the Ministry of Education and Training. Other elements of the circular include specific requirements for class sizes, security and facilities. The circular imposes a strict ban on substandard and unlicensed kindergartens. Vietnam tours

Bookstores provide friendly, free reading environment

Many bookstores in HCM City have become ideal places for students to read books without having to pay for books. At noon Nhan Van Bookshop in Go Vap District appears to be deserted, but, once inside, one can see a surprising amount of young people perusing the isles and flipping through pages. Nhan Van bookstore looks like a library Most are students, moving quietly around the bookcases, looking for their favourite titles. Nguyen Thi Huong, a student from HCM City Industrial University, said, after class she often comes to the bookstore to read. When she has enough time, she arrives when the store opens and does not leave until they close. Huong said the bookstore is only busy after 5pm, when many people come to shop. The rest of the day is quiet, making it ideal for reading. Also, unlike libraries, bookstores do not require any paperwork or fees, she added. "For students, paying hundreds of thousands of VND for books can really add up, and we can't afford to buy them all the time. It's great to be able to read the latest books without having to spend a lot of money. It is very good to read the latest books without having to pay any fees," Huong shared. Tran Dang Khoi, a student from Hermann Gmeiner Primary School in Go Vap District said, during vacation, besides helping parents to do housework, he spends around two hours a day to reading at the bookstore. Nguyen Ngoc Thao, from District 5, said she usually takes her children to Phuong Nam Bookstore to encourage them to read. Initially, they were not interested, but now it has become their hobby. They often ask her to take them. She is unable to afford to buy as many books for the children as she would like, so a great solution is for them to read at the bookstore, she said, adding that it is a great parenting tool. She is able to choose the books her children read and keep them interested in educational subjects, as well as distract them from computer games. Tran Van Tho, manager of Nhan Van Bookstore, said people are welcome to read in the comfortable environment of the store. He said that the staff have been instructed to be friendly with these visitors. "The only caviat we have is that they remain silent and take good care of the books. Lang Co-World Beautiful Bay Festival to take place

Muong Village notorious for tobacco addiction

An Nghia Commune, a mountainous region in Lac Son District, Hoa Binh Province, has become notorious for the great number of people addicted to pipe tobacco. 35th anniversary of UNESCO Vietnam marked

A ceremony took place in Hanoi on June 15 to mark the 35 th years since Vietnam 's National Commission for UNESCO (UNESCO Vietnam) was set up. Among the guests at the event were Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan and Eric Falt, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Public Information and head of UNESCO's National Commissions in Asia and the Pacific. On speaking at the ceremony, UNESCO Vietnam's General Secretary Pham Cao Phong said that after being established on June 15, 1977, UNESCO Vietnam became one of 198 UNESCO national commissions around the world. It helps to maintain international peace and security by encouraging cooperation between countries in culture, education and sciences. The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Nguyen Thanh Son, Chairman of Vietnam's National Commission for UNESCO, stressed that UNESCO is important to people and is significant for the country's integration and socio-economic development. In the future, agencies, provinces and the public will continue to take part in the commission's action programmes to develop the country and make it prosper while upholding UNESCO's objectives, he said. Son said he hoped that UNESCO will increase its support for and coordination with Vietnamese UNESCO agencies. To mark the occasion, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan presented the Independence Order, third class, to Vietnam 's National Commission for UNESCO. Later the same day, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan received Eric Falt. Nhan said that Vietnam hopes to continue receiving support from UNESCO, especially in education and the preservation and restoration of cultural heritages. He thanked UNESCO for its contributions to Vietnam and the effective programmes it has carried out in the country, including education for all; education for sustainable development; culture and development and for finalising the nations policies on protecting cultural and natural heritages. Mr Falt acknowledged UNESCO Vietnam's ceaseless efforts to maintain the country's distinctive cultural, educational and scientific values and for helping to enrich the world with its cultural heritage treasures. During his stay in Vietnam , Falt is scheduled to attend a ceremony to award a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Certificate to Thanh Hoa province's Ho Dynasty Citadel as well as a meeting of UNESCO's National Committees in the Asia-Pacific region.
